Naturally Native is the first mainstream feature film to be written, directed and produced entirely by Native Americans.
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998 to extensive critical acclaim, Naturally Native has since shown at over a dozen film festivals in the US and abroad, winning several prominent awards along the way. The film is now playing on a regional basis at theaters across the US including successful runs in Los Angeles, Seattle, Yakima and Denver. Openings are scheduled for Spring/Summer 2000 in Providence, Phoenix, Tucson, Salt Lake City and Hawaii, with an East Coast tour soon to follow.
This original soundtrack features contributions from many top names in popular Native American music. New songs written specifically for the film were contributed by Donna Summer, Joanne Shenandoah, and Juni Kae Randall. The original score by composer Murielle Hamilton adds dramatic Native American sonance with Bill Miller featured on flute. Mary Youngblood, Walela (Rita & Priscilla Coolidge and Laura Satterfield), and Arigon Starr add stellar tracks to the mix, while the Mystic River Singers hold down tradition with a spirited pow-wow chant. Christafari and Carlos Reynosa add pop elements that keep the energy flowing throughout these diverse, yet always top quality performances. The contrasts in the music reflect the many changes of life that are all part of the drama of Naturally Native.
